I had been watching the renovations on the facebook page knowing my dad was working on it and he features quite prominently in photos covered in the white plaster dust he so often came home in after a hard day’s toil. I knew he had been invaluable in the renovations from talking my sister and from the subsequent ‘Merv Burger’ that was placed on the menu when the doors opened but it wasn’t until we (the kids and I) went for a tour of it ourselves that the true extent of what my father had done was apparent.
We were shown around all the spaces by the effervescent and wondrous owner, Denise, who so graciously let us poke around and observe as we wished and took great point in highlighting all the work my Dad had done. He was also there, blushing with all the attention. Grand rooms only made grander by his work; massive ornate cornices, ceilings lowered and walls fixed, a recovered moulded treasure broken in three, repaired flawlessly and hung above a doorway and all done by my Dad.
It is a beautiful building now and of no small part because of my father’s hard work and what I came to see was a work of art.
